Jerry Weil began his career in computer graphics as an undergraduate student at
Brown University, under the guidance of Andries Van Dam. As a researcher in the
graphics lab, he helped develop a prototype of a graphical maintenance and
repair manual for the Office of Naval Research. After receiving his Masters
from Brown, Jerry worked in computer graphics research at AT&T Bell Laboratories
where he wrote the first published paper on computer generated cloth. Jerry
later moved to Los Angeles, entering the world of production at Whitney Demos
Productions. When that company folded, Jerry helped found Optomistic along
with John Whitney Jr. and Karl Simms. At Optomistic, Jerry worked on a variety
of
projects in commercials, music videos, film and television; his favorite
project was building a virtual city for the artist Matt Mullican which was
exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Jerry went on to work for
Metrolight Studios for 13 years, until it finally closed in 2003. At Metrolight,
Jerry worked on countless projects in all media as an artist and supervisor.
Since Metrolight's closing, Jerry has freelanced at a variety of companies as an
effects animator or lighting TD. He has worked on over 30 feature
films, dozens of commercials, television shows, and theme park attractions.
His favorite project was the planetarium show at the world famous
Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.
